July 4 -The Africa Cup of Nations, seemingly buffeted constantly by logistical issues, has suffered another setback with next year’s tournament moved to 2024 and switched from June to January because of likely adverse weather conditions.
June 28 – Fouzi Lekjaa has been re-elected unopposed as president of the Moroccan FA for a third four-year term.
June 27 – Danny Jordaan has retained the presidency of the South African Football Association (SAFA) for a third and final term after a very contentious election defeating former SAFA vice-president Ria Ledwaba, who could have become the first woman to lead the game in the country.
June 27 – Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Patrice Motsepe has suggested that the Motsepe Foundation could pay for Pitso Mosimane to become the new boss of Bafana Bafana.
June 24 – Four teams from South Africa’s fourth tier have been banned for good after being found guilty of match fixing when crucial games in the race for promotion finished, wait for it, 33-1 and 59-1 respectively… including 41 own goals!
June 22 – Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Patrice Motsepe (pictured) has been implicated in the latest criminal case against South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
June 17 – Ehab Galal has been dismissed as the head coach of the Egyptian national team after just three matches in charge, the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) have confirmed.
June 13 – Despite a plea from world players union Fifpro, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has thrown out an appeal by Kenya women’s team to be reinstated in next month’s African Cup of Nations, citing a legal technicality.
June 8 – African trio Morocco, Nigeria and Tanzania have completed the lineup for the U17 Women’s World Cup in India.
May 31 – Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca dethroned Egypt’s Al Ahly as kings of African football with a 2-0 win in the final of the continent’s Champions League.
May 24 – Kenya and Zimbabwe will not feature in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after they were kicked out of the upcoming qualifiers by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
May 18 – Zimbabwe’s Premier Soccer League (PSL) has suspended all matches until further notice after the biggest domestic club game had to be abandoned because of fan violence.
May 18 – Ghanaian football has been struck by a match-fixing scandal with top-flight clubs Ashanti Gold and Inter Allies hit with demotion to the third tier and players and officials of both clubs heavily sanctioned.
May 17 – Mauritius will play in the group stage of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers after Sao Tome and Principe were thrown out for fielding an ineligible player during their preliminary round tie and breaching COVID-19 protocols.
May 15 – Gianni Infantino has enjoyed a good weekend. New Cosafa president Artur de Almeida e Silva (pictured) has vowed that his regional governing body will support the FIFA boss’ bid for re-election next year.
